The Cultural Association of Historical Rome will be staging a historical reenactment of the assassination of Caesar at the Largo Argentina archeological site on March 15th, 2018 at 2pm. Then, they will lead a procession to the site where Caesar was cremated in the Forum at the Temple of Divius Julius.
The assassination of Caesar was a huge event in world history, marking the transition of Republican Rome to Imperial Rome. The reenactors will perform the event in three scenes in the Largo Argentina site. The first scene consists of the meeting Marcus Antonius, Cato, Cicero, senators and tribunes of the plebs declared Caesar an enemy of Rome. The second scene has Caesar encountering the soothsayer at the Curia who warns him to “Beware of the Ides of March!” before he enters the Senate and is stabbed by the conspirators. And finally, the last scene has speeches of Caesar’s wife, Calpurnia, and Marc Antony during the funeral of Caesar.
The group will then proceed down the Via dei Fori Imperiali, escorted by the Decima Legio Association, to the Temple of Julius Caesar – site of Caesar’s cremation before the public days after his murder.
I would love, Love LOVEEEEE to see this!!! This event happens in the normally restricted archeological area of the Largo Argentina and has become an event that attracts visitors from around the world. For the second year in a row, they are having an accompaniment of Roman Legion reenactors in the procession to the Forum. I would think I simply died and went to “History Nerd” heaven!
Check out the Cultural Association of the Roman Historical Group for information about this, and other events they run such as the Gladiator School. Ides of March information is at: http://www.gruppostoricoromano.it/idi-di-marzo/ (Site is in Italian and may require translation).
